Apprentice profile: George Martinez

In National Apprenticeship Week, our latest apprentices share their insights on what attracted them to their training and what they’re enjoying the most.

First up is our plumbing apprentice, George Martinez.

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?

"I saw an apprenticeship as a great opportunity to learn a trade and improve my skills."

What attracted you to work in plumbing?

"When I was 16 and in college, I used to work part-time for my uncle doing plumbing. I fell in love with the trade, so knew from an early age that I wanted to pursue a career in it."

What attracted you to working for REL?

"At the end of 2020, I started working for REL as a labourer. I realised what a great company it was, and the team offered to help me start my plumbing apprenticeship."

Can you describe a typical day?

"Each morning, I get instructed on what tasks need to be achieved. It’s varied work and I’m kept really busy. I work alongside a mentor who provides on the job training and supervision, so I’m supported throughout."

What are you enjoying most about your apprenticeship?

"I’m really enjoying learning a new trade while working alongside great, experienced people who are more than happy to help me develop."
