NAW 2021: What I like most about being an apprentice

“There were a number of reasons why I choose an apprenticeship instead of going to University. Electricians are an essential trade and I have always had an interest in gaining the specialist skills needed to be an electrician. My apprenticeship has allowed me to work alongside experienced electricians whilst learning how to do the job. It’s also given me the opportunity to gain practical work experience and qualifications at the same time.

“One of the main benefits is the chance to meet and learn from the other electricians at REL. I’ve been able to do on and off the job training and I continue to learn a lot every day. Also, the qualifications I’m completing are enabling me to put the things I learn into practice day to day.

“I have seen a lot of people finish university with a good degree but struggle to secure a full-time job. An apprenticeship has given me essential work experience that many people who have gone to university lack.

“I like working and completing the qualifications at the same time. Working with others in REL has given me practical work experience skills that I would not have got if I went to university. I have worked with some great people that have taught me a lot.”
